Riots for Nahel in Lyon, June 2023

Lyon - Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes - France

After the deadly police shooting of 17yo Nahel in Nanterre over a not complying at a traffic stop, violent protests erupted in all French cities. French anti terrorism units were deployed all over the country with firearms and armored vehicles, as widespread looting and vandalism is taking place. - In Lyon, for the 4th night in a row, several thousand people formed small groups all over the city and clashed with the police. Many stores were looted, a few cars were torched as well as some police stations. The police used tear gas (including American made cannisters by antiterrorism units), rubber rounds, stinger grenades and flash bangs. The police allegedly seized medical equipment from a medic, shot a protestor with a rubber round in the face and ran over another one with a car resulting in a fractured leg. Clashes lasted all night all over the city and it's suburbs. - Since Nahel's shooting, over 2000 people have been arrested in connection to the protests. Curfews have been set in place in several towns. The ministry of internal affairs has said that the riots are the most violent clashes since the 2005 banlieue uprisings. Several police unions have called for the use of live rounds and many political figures on the right and far right are calling for the army to get involved.
