In Deerfox Minhwa (2020), I used gouache paints to emulate the artistic style of 민화 (minhwa), a Korean folk art. The Deerfox character emerged from a vision I had when I was engaging in art for play. He embodies silliness, creativity, and pranks. Popular in the 19th and 20th centuries, 민화 was painted by self-taught Korean artists, most of whom were working class, to bless their homes, engage in humor, and to keep out bad spirits.
