This dance is known today is of Mixtec and Spanish origin from the viceregal era; With the dance of the feather it was sought to represent the conquest of the valley of and the Mesoamerican dominions led by Moctezuma at the hands of Hernán Cortés, symbolizing the triumph of Catholicism over the native religions as the Spaniards called them upon their arrival on the continent.
