Bride and groom getting married in the pandemic

Jeddah - Makkah Province - Saudi Arabia

My friend Zahra and her fiancé Samer had planned to be at a resort in Egypt to celebrate their union. When they pushed the date for personal reasons, a nationwide lockdown was suddenly ordered, with airports closing in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 here in Saudi Arabia. Three days after a 7pm curfew, and 3 days before a 3pm curfew, the couple celebrated quietly with 3 friends and 5 family members (plus me, the photographer friend, who tried to be the fly on the wall, and the officiant who came briefly and left) as the government ordered that no more than 10 people could gather in one place at a time. I was a bit nervous to go out there since this happened at the very start of the pandemic when we did it know enough about it, and there was a curfew, but I’ve been documenting Zahra’s life for 5 years now, so this would have been an important day to miss. The gloves were put on while wearing the rings as a joke at first, to remember this pandemic union, and they stayed in them when I continued shooting. (As soon as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had a case of COVID-19, the government took immediate action to control the situation as fast as possible. Many couples and families were affected as a result of the closing of the airports on the 15th of March, 2020.)
