In this moment, the soft piano ballad was filling the open space of the studio apartment with beautiful notes. I happen to glance down at a beautiful human who was wrapped in her puffy comforter, like she was being cuddled by a cloud. As I observed her, I noticed that she had drifted off to another place in her mind. A place that was inside the same four walls where we were. A place that I could tell she needed to be. I then realized in that moment that we were both humans and friends and we were sharing the same space, yet we were in our own different worlds mentally. I didn’t want to disrupt this moment, because where she was, it was where her peace was. I was in a state of creative flow, and I was choosing not to interject on her peace because I was in a place where my peace was. Even if it wasn’t for hours, I was giving her the space she needed to just be. At any moment she could’ve broken down and cried and I would have been there to just listen to the heartfelt release. So many times, we as people don’t allow others to be at peace in their own worlds. So many times, women are not granted the safety to feel their emotions. What if women intentionally held space for the woman next to them or in front of them to just genuinely be herself, in whatever emotional space she is in. Next time you see someone at peace in a different world than their current reality, give them the grace to just be for a while. They just might be healing themselves.
