Cabin Life Fever - a series about Scandinavian County Homes and Seaside Culture Scandinavian cabin culture is nothing short of a national obsession. It is a phenomenon. There are many, many thousands of cabins, cottages, and lodges all over Scandinavia. Some are located high up in the mountains, others by the coastline. Regardless of their size or amenities, they all have one thing in common. The cabin is an integral part of friluftsliv, the Scandinavian outdoors lifestyle. Having your own summer cabin is part of the Scandinavian soul. It is the perfect escape plan for urban people to get away from the side effects of modern life and slow down for a bit. Cottage life is about relaxation. Although there is always something to do around a summer cabin. So it’s no place for a couch potato. Time at the summer cabin is about work - with your hands. Most summer houses were originally built to a basic standard, without hot water (or any water at all), drainage, insulation or electricity – this sparseness being an important part of their attraction. Collecting and chopping wood for the fireplace, lighting a candle and read a good book, no TV and smartphones for a week or two. These are all part of the fun. To enjoy the benefits of a simple life. Moving to the summer house is a ritual deeply engrained in the Scandinavian psyche. An experience worth trying, not only for Scandinavians.
